You are What You Eat?

It may be cliché to say ‘you are what you eat’ but it is true. Our body requires a healthy combination of different foods and fluids to function and maintain proper health. The three basic food group types are – protein, carbohydrates and fat. A healthy balanced diet, comprising of the three basic food groups, in the right proportions will result in overall optimum physical health. The amount of food your body needs will depend on age and how active your life is.

Eating habits and diets vary from country to country. Studies have shown that this is often in direct relation to the prevalence of certain diseases such as heart disease. Traditional British and American diets are high in cholesterol, rich in calories and low in fibre. This type of diet leads to increases in obesity and heart disease. Traditional Mediterranean diets rich in fibre, olive oil, garlic, red wine and fish lead to lower cholesterol and fat consumption resulting in fewer people suffering from conditions such as obesity and heart disease. The Japanese have always had a low incident rate of heart disease because of the high quantity of fish included in their diet. They also show low levels of colorectal cancer due to their frequent consumption of fibre. Unfortunately their eating patterns are changing more to the Western patterns of eating, including higher fat consumption. A lack of fibre in Western diets is causing a range of digestive tract problems such as haemorroids, diverticular disease and constipation. Increasing levels of obesity ranging from young children up and into adulthood is also believed by researchers to be linked to the high levels of fat and sugars included in the diet.

A healthy diet needs to be balanced. As mentioned above, the diet must comprise of the three basic nutrients – protein, carbohydrates and fat, as well as the micronutrients of minerals and vitamins. Current recommendations from Dieticians state that you should aim for:

• 40% carbohydrate

• 30% protein

• Not more than 30% fat

Sources of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates – sugars and starches – are found in bread, potatoes, rice, cereals and pasta. They also provide fibre in your diet too. Wholegrain and unprocessed foods such as whole meal pasta, brown rice, brown or whole-wheat bread provide the healthiest carbohydrate source. Fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of carbohydrates (in fibre form), vitamins, minerals and natural sugars. Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

Sources of Protein

Meat and fish are rich sources of protein and readily available energy. Red meat and lamb contain higher proportions of fat (cholesterol), than white meat of chicken and turkey. Nuts, beans, peas and lentils are low in fat, rich in protein and high in fibre.

Sources of Fat

Fats are important in our diet, as they are a source of energy that supplies the basic building blocks for our body’s cells. They also help our body absorb certain vitamins. We need to balance our intake of fat especially saturated fat as it can lead to various health problems. Choose most of your fat intake from the healthier unsaturated fats. They provide protection against heart disease whereas saturated fat promotes the clogging up of arteries in the body known as atherosclerosis. High levels of saturated fat are found in red meat, some cheeses, ice creams, biscuits, cakes and chocolate bars. Milk and dairy products can be high in fat, but supply our bodies with vitamins and minerals. The fat and oils you use when cooking adds to your overall daily fat consumption. Keep your intake of saturated fats to a minimum, choosing unsaturated fats where possible.

• Polyunsaturated fats: Safflower oil, Sunflower oil, Corn oil

• Monounsaturated fats: Peanut oil, Olive oil, Avocado oil

• Saturated fats: Butter, Coconut oil

Vitamins and Minerals

These micronutrients are found in abundance in fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans, whole grains, meat and fish. Eating a balanced diet every day will ensure you receive all the vitamins and minerals your body requires to perform at its best. Unfortunately, most of us do not receive the necessary vitamins and minerals from our diets on a daily basis, so taking a multivitamin will be required.

Exceptional January Snow for the Northern Alps

Climate change and the global downturn, these twin threats have saved the French Alps, leastwise for Christmas. On the other hand it could have been so altogether polar. In the weeks before Christmas villages in the Serre Chevalier region were cut off when heavy snow came down. Motorway cols such as the crowded Col du Portes du Soleil were cut. At that place there was no mains or phone lines, locals had to be moved out to make shift accommodation, it appeared as if it were a repeat of 1997.

It looks that all publicity is good publicity. Les Gets appeared every night on national French news bulletins. When mains was repaired inquiries began to come in, pulled in by the great snow.

Chamonix and nearby Blanc Chamonix have just about five metres snow depth on the higher pistes at 2400 meters altitude and 2.3 m at the end of the runs. At the moment the deepest in the French Alps. Les Arcs says that there is 4 m at the the highest point of the resort. Alas a snow storm has knocked over a pylon of the ski lift which accesses the sector. They’ll be broken until mid March.

In other places in the Alps reservations are up 16% in Avoriaz, Courchevel and Val Thorens. Savoie has 99.7% tenancy and distributed a record number of ski passes on Saturday. This is great news for main skiing operators.

Peanut Butter: Check for Trans Fats

Many of the major brands of peanut butter contain partially hydrogenated oils, which we recommend that you avoid. Partially hydrogenated oils are solid at room temperature, so the peanut butter manufacturers use them to keep the oil from separating and to give their products a very long shelf life. They don’t have to add very much partially hydrogenated oil, but it is there – look at the list of ingredients. They try to fool you because if the amount is less than .5 grams per serving, they can say “0 grams of trans fats” or “no trans fats.” A serving of peanut butter is two tablespoons — so they can put as much as 8 grams of trans fats in a 16-ounce jar and still attach a label that says “No Trans Fats”!.

If you think it’s important to avoid trans fats, as we do, you will read the list of ingredients on every processed food you buy and put back any that include the words “partially hydrogenated” or “hydrogenated”. If you find a brand that does not contain partially hydrogenated oils, you may notice when you pick up a jar that there’s about half an inch of oil at the top. You need to stir this in before you use it.

Most supermarkets now carry at least a few brands that don’t contain partially hydrogenated oils. My current favorite is Smart Balance Omega Peanut Butter, which has the added bonus of omega-3 fatty acids, “good fats” that we all need.

I hope this means that the supermarkets are getting the message that we want choices that don’t contain partially hydrogenated oils – in peanut butter and all other foods. If you can’t find these peanut butter in your supermarket, go to the Customer Service desk and 1) ask if they carry any peanut butter without partially hydrogenated oils (they may be able to tell you where it is), and 2) if the answer is no, ask them to stock some.

The Early Years of Peter Sutherland

In recent times the most noticeable public role for Peter Sutherland as chairman of BP PLC was to play host at the company’s yearly meeting. But after a run of oil spills, deadly accidents and an energy-trading scandal at BP, the 60-year-old one-time rugby player has rushed into the scrum. It would be an apt description to say Peter Sutherland is a bulldog of a man with large powerful shoulders having captained the UCD team as a prop in his early years. He played for Lansdowne and was captain there as well.

A tough, powerful forward, he has suffered several injuries including a broken nose. He is a character who does not mind being in the thick of it, something his early years are clearly indicative of. Here’s a four step process to get your creativity going:

1) Precisely define your goal.

The more precisely you define a goal the more likely you are to get it and recognize it when it arrives. You cannot reach a goal that you do not have.

2) Identify efforts that have not worked in the past and drop them.

Don’t stay stuck. Remember that you are stuck when you keep doing the same things that don’t work over and over again and expect different results.

If it’s not working, it’s not working. Don’t try to come up with new and better ways to ride a dead horse.

3) Come up with crazy, silly, bizarre, outlandish ways to achieve your goal, that you would never do, but are fun to think about.

One of the best paths to creativity is humor. Take it.

4) Come up with creative ideas that will get you where you want to go.

Sometimes the seeds for these creative ideas are in the crazy ideas. Other times, simply laughing at the crazy ideas will boost your creative juices for other solutions.

Remember how creative you were as a kid? The things you could build, the games you could create, the stories you told. Why not use the same creativity as an adult?

As there are so many different types of yoga available today, it can present a major problem for beginners. It is of best advice to choose a form of yoga that is appropriate for each individual’s level of fitness, physical and spiritual goals and health condition.

1. Iyengar Yoga

3. Bikram Yoga

These types of yoga are also known as the ‘hot yoga’ for this is done in a very warm room. These types of yoga are excellent tools for increasing flexibility because the heat helps tissue to stretch.

But keep in mind that these types of yoga are not applicable to those that have developed cardio vascular diseases due to the strain placed on the body when vigorously exercising in the heat.

4. Viniyoga

These types of yoga links breathe and movement in flowing exercises that are adapted to each individual. These are often a good form of yoga for those with back problems or neck injuries because it can be easily adapted by anyone.

5. Raja Yoga

These types of yoga aims for liberation through meditation. These types of yoga are only for those people who are capable of intense concentration.

6. Bhakti yoga

Or commonly known as devotional yoga. These types of yoga focus on self surrender in the face of the divine.

7. Mantra yoga

Much more know as the “yoga of potent sound’. These types of yoga aims at liberation through the verbal or mental repetition of empowered sounds, such as “om”, “hum”, or “ram”.

There are so many yoga institutions to choose from. It is also a good idea that before going into a class, discuss with the teacher first regarding hi or her philosophy and beliefs in order to find the most appropriate and personally appealing form of yoga for you.

Two Months, Two Actions: First Steps to Success

Susan stood on the scale the other day. She had gained two pounds.

Fred muttered to himself, “damn smokes cost a ton and are killing me”, as he passed another five dollar bill across the counter.

Mark promised his wife that this would be the year that they took a vacation, the same promise that he’s made every year since they were married.

Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? Go to a mirror and take a good look at yourself. What you have done differently in these last two months? The New Year began, January and February are history, and what is different in your life? Did you follow through on any of your resolutions? Did you even bother to make any?

I hear people consistently talk about the things they want to accomplish in their lives. We all want to lose weight, get in shape, make and save more money, get ahead, quit smoking and more….or do we?

Here is the dirty little secret about these broken promises: we don’t really want to keep them. The real reason we don’t accomplish our goals is because we don’t do the work. We want things to simply “happen” for us. Except that life doesn’t work that way. There are no magic solutions.

However, I have great news for you. If you decide to make positive changes in your life, you can! There are two things you need to do, two actions you must take, and you can accomplish anything!

The first is this: make a resolution to put the effort in to getting what you want. New Years’ is not the only time you can make a resolution. Resolving to make a change is something you can do at any moment, so long as it is done with real intention and determination.

The next action is to learn and use a success system. Instead of concentrating on your goals, concentrate on a system that will lead you to that goal. Do you know what separates the successful and the unsuccessful? All successful people learn and follow a system. Once you do, you can repeat it and target every area of your life.
