Permission To Be An Artist – Granted!

Filed under: Self Improvement Infos @ 7:54 am

Since I’ve been offering Artist Retreat Day programs, I’ve been hearing a lot about the concept of “permission”. Some artists who said yes to a retreat day shared that this was a much-needed structure to enable and empower them to FINALLY give themselves permission to take time for their creative work.

Others just couldn’t say yes, just couldn’t give themselves permission.

What does it mean to have permission to do something? My thesaurus tells me that other words related to permission are: consent, sanctioning and authorization.

Consent signifies agreement, validation that what you’re doing meets with specific expectations, criteria and guidelines. It sounds solemn and like someone has faith in you. Sanction is an even more formal declaration of acceptance and faith.

Authorized to Create

Authorization – well, that implies that you’re something special. That not just anyone is meant to be painting this painting, writing this song or designing that jewelry. You have been specially authorized to do it.

And why? Because you have the unique gifts that are necessary to bring that creative project into being. Who authorized you? The same power that granted you those gifts and skills – whether you choose to think of that as God, the universe, Spirit, or another name. As we read in the Science of Getting Rich [link], we’re not given the desire to do something without also giving you the skill to carry it out.

Why is it so difficult to authorize ourselves, grant ourselves permission and consent, to sanction our own creative work? Sometimes we seek this permission from others, unconsciously (or consciously) hoping they’ll deny it, so we won’t really have to venture into the scary world of living up to our potential.

A lot of these words symbolize that external permission is needed. And sometimes it is.

Permission from Others

Whether you want to attend an artist retreat day, meet a deadline or just develop a new idea that came to you overnight, you’ll sometimes need permission from the people you share your life with to take the time for your creative work.

It might mean delegating household work or child-care or rescheduling a date or planned event. All of you might also need a willingness to be flexible and to accept that sometimes things don’t get done right away. It also means ensuring an environment of support for your work.

Will others give you permission? Of course you can’t control what anyone else thinks, says or does, but consider this: our loved ones will take cues from us about how serious our creative work is to us. If we’re constantly putting it on the back burner, putting our work down, and letting it be the first thing to go when things get stressful or busy, we’re teaching others to treat it the same way.

If we don’t take our creative work seriously, why should they?

Permission from Self – Artist at Work

I think what’s even more important is the permission we give ourselves. There are so many reasons we deny ourselves permission to pursue our creative work. Fear tops the list. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of what people will think of us, fear of being good, fear of being terrible, or fear we’ll let someone else down, to name a few examples.

Sometimes we hold on to earlier instances when we were denied permission, denied access, not sanctioned or authorized, or when our work was criticized or belittled. Some of us have even been told, directly, NOT to pursue our creative work (“don’t give up your day job”, “find another path”, “you have no business doing this work”), which hung a big UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS sign on the door of our creative hearts.

So hang a new sign on your creative heart – one that reads “Artist at work”. And in fine print, “This work has been sanctioned by _______” (the name of your source of Power).

10 Signs That You’ve Given Yourself Permission To Be A Creative Artist

1. The first words out of your mouth when someone asks “and what do you do?” are “I’m a songwriter/artist/sculptor/writer, etc.”.

2. You work steadily at your craft, whether it’s working on or re-working pieces or promoting your work.

3. You teach your loved ones to treat your art seriously.

4. The materials and resources that you need to create with are part of your budget and are planned expenses every month.

5. You’re committed to your learning, growth and development, participating in artists groups and discussion forums and seeking out mentorship and coaching.

6. You don’t let mistakes or criticism stop you from taking your next steps.

7. You’re building the resources you need to support yourself financially, emotionally and spiritually.

8. You’re conscious of your physical lifestyle habits and choose the ones that won’t interfere with your creative work.

9. You find opportunities to pass on your knowledge and support wherever possible, to someone who’s had less experience than you have.

10. You consistently say no to requests for your time, energy and commitment that will take you away from your creative work.

Why Everyone Needs a Coach

Filed under: Self Improvement Infos @ 4:48 am

If you look around at the top performers today in any field – sports, sales, or even coaching itself – you’ll find that almost all of these top performers have at least one thing in common. They all had a coach at one time or another in their professional careers.

Whether your field is golf, tennis, running, sales, business management, or
writing, a coach can help you perform at a much higher level. Here’s how:

1. A good coach will keep you motivated. Since you’ll have to report regularly
to your coach, you’ll get constant feedback and encouragement, which will
keep you motivated to achieve your best.

2. A good coach will offer a system for success. With a system in place, you’ll
be more likely to stick with it. Plus, you won’t be taking just a hit-or-miss
approach to success.

3. A good coach will help you learn to plan. Your coach will help you set goals
that are realistic and design training that will help you achieve those goals. In
other words, a good coach will keep you focused.

4. A good coach will offer you professional advice. After a while, you won’t rely
on your coach for every decision you make about your career or performance.
But you’ll still want the coach around when you need a little professional
advice.

5. A good coach will help you get beyond certain plateaus when you no longer
seem to be moving ahead and improving. Working alone, you might feel stuck
at a certain point in your career. But a good coach will help you overcome
those plateaus and move ahead to the next level of performance and
accomplishment.

6. A good coach will help you accurately evaluate your progress. Sometimes it’s
difficult to evaluate our own progress. We tend to focus on the negative, and
only see our faults and failures. A good coach will help you see things more
realistically.

7. A good coach will make the process fun. Let’s face it. What’s the sense in
striving for your highest level of performance if you aren’t going to enjoy the
process? Your coach will help you design a working schedule that won’t
overwhelm you, so you’ll enjoy the entire process of achieving your best.

Top performers in all fields would probably tell you they wouldn’t be where
they are today without a good coach.

Everyone needs a coach. So find a coach who is right for you. Then get ready to
enjoy the climb to your top level of performance.

Truth About Life Coaching School Accreditation

Filed under: Self Improvement Infos @ 12:38 am

With life coaching becoming “the” career choice in this millennium, many of you are seeking the right choice for training and certification. Hopefully this article will answer some of your questions.

There are many fine life coach schools, academies and institutes. Some are accredited and some not. Should the school’s accreditation make a difference to you? In my opinion, no.

Because there are no universal standards for the life coaching profession, there are no universal standards for schools. Also, because well-paid coaches generally work in a niche, those niches are such that they are developed by the coach independently of any training they might receive.

What makes the issue of accreditation particularly confusing is marketing. Accreditation is being used as a marketing tool in some cases, not as a barometer of their success. Many coaching schools are accredited only because a group of colleagues got together and decided to form a group and accredit their associates’ schools. How do you know whether this is the case for a school you are interested in? You really don’t know and generally can’t find out.

Many schools use accreditation as a marketing ploy to draw you in and charge exhorbitant rates. If you just want to spend more money, go ahead. Price really has little to do with the effectiveness of the materials. Mid-range schools generally work harder to please students and offer as good or better training in many cases, because students get more one-on-one time with instructors.

How important is a school’s accreditation? Let’s put it into realistic perspective. What is most important to a prospective coaching client is, can this coach help me? Most clients look to see whether a coach has had formal coach training, but not into the background of the school. And the truth is, clients don’t care whether the school you attended, is accredited. It just doesn’t come up. Clients will decide to use your services if they like you, feel a connection, and experience benefits from their sample session with you. That’s pretty much it.

Peer Resources (http://www.peer.ca/coachingschools.html), recognized world leader in coach training resources states “accreditation” in the coaching field at present has a number of troubling aspects, including its lack of wide-spread acceptance, conflicts of interests between reviewers and some rated schools, minimal reporting of results, and questionable or vague criteria. While accreditation typically means the school has been reviewed by an external source, it does not necessarily mean that “non-accredited schools” provide less value or poorer quality programs.”

Since coaching is a distinct and relatively new profession, and no universal standards exist, many new schools have come into existence. To build a fence around the training opportunities and the income derived from it, some schools formed organizations to accredit only their schools of choice and make it nearly impossible for a newer school to become accredited. They will mandate applicant schools to show evidence of ten or more years of professional success, before they even consider them for accreditation. Then, they apply personal biases for accrediting schools, so unless a school fits within their philosophies, they aren’t eligible or will not be approved.

So how does the potential coaching student make a sound choice? Here are some ways:

Read student testimonials

Verify the school’s philosophies allign with yours

Contact the school and see if they are prompt with replies to your questions

Look for a school in your desired niche – Here is an example:

Let’s say you are a Christian and prefer training that agrees with your faith. It will be important to select a Christian (bible-based) certification course. Admittedly this niche offers a few options for training. Some are accredited and some not. But this should not matter, because there is no governing body to decide whose course is best. The Christian schools who show accreditation from established secular accrediting bodies, are actually less likely to have substantive biblical content, because secular groups frequently subscribe to new age philosophies and may influence course content and materials.

Through my research and contact with various institutions, there was only one Christian coaching school which impressed me. That is the Professional Christian Counseling and Coaching Academy. (www.pccca.org). PCCCA offers training and certification for Christian Life Coaches and Christian Counselors.

I found they stand on their principles of faith, maintain the integrity of their programs and consistently strive for excellence. What is more, they offer one-to-one training with practicing coaches, serving as coach training instructors. Any coaching school’s success relies on what they bring to the table with their skills, integrity, response-time, reasonable fees and knowledge. Add that to superb training and you have an unbeatable combination. While PCCCA has Christian School Accreditation, they do not have secular coaching school accreditation.

I recommend that potential students not be persuaded by gimicky advertising, high fees and accreditation. Look for the best school for you. Period.

Canada Sees Rise in Online Poker Revenue

Filed under: Fun Place, Games, Virtual Gambling @ 9:33 am

Over the past decade more money as been flowing into Canada, and as a result, gambling and online pokerhas seen a rise there as well.

A report from government sponsored Stat Canada reports that Canada takes in nearly 13.6 Billion annual in various online poker and gambling activities, approximately 500 dollars per person.

But for some whistleblowers, this can is seen as a problem. One company in particular offers a variety of products to help people get over their gambling problems, and to help others avoid falling prey to what they call the alluring temptation.

And their point is to be well taken. It’s been psychologically noted and documented that some individuals do in fact develop an addiction to gambling, but on that same token, several others can gamble for leisure and never develop any kind of degenerating condition, economically or socially.

Invariably, for every positive thing one has to say about an industry, there are others on the other side who have equally negative things to say.

My thoughts are to take it with a grain of salt. After all we’re all adults here, and we’re all responsible for our own online poker actions. For every one person who gets addicted and causes themselves serious harm betting money on chance, there are five more who aren’t causing any harm in any way to themselves or their families.

I take a kind of moral pragmatism on this issue. The net benefitrevenue for businesses and the countries; stimulus for the economies, jobs created to help run such gamingcompared to the minimal detriment and large amount of resources available to those who truly do have a gambling problem, the proposition to support gambling is clear to me.

While many may see such a stance as uncaring, I simply see the good outweighing the bad here. After all, we have choices to make choices. Not to have such strict regulation that we don’t have to think for ourselves or take responsibilities for our own actions.

Discount Software

Filed under: Software Hall @ 7:49 pm

We all know that the price of computer software can get pretty steep, and not all people can readily afford to buy them. This is why illegal copies are everywhere. Authorities and software developers are strictly reprimanding organizations and individuals from using pirated copies, but this has not stopped many people from still using replicated software.

But are copies really worth the risk? Apparently not, because using it poses more disadvantages than advantages. You could face the authorities and have to pay hefty amounts in penalties once you are caught using pirated versions. Also, fake software does not reliably give the same performance as the original ones – it may not be eligible for regular updates, for example, and are more prone to virus attacks and corruption.

So instead of taking a risk with pirated software, why not just buy from discount software stores? Discount software products are a cheaper alternative. You get the original version for more than half the standard retail price.

Do not be misled. Just because they are ‘discount’ software does not mean they are defective or have low-quality. Discount software is just the same as regular software – they are just cheaper because they’re older versions, or because the manufacturer has discontinued the line.

There are a lot of reliable and credible discount software dealers that you can rely on to give you original, high-quality software at cut rates, if you know how to spot them. Do your research before you buy. First, know if the dealer is an established company in the discount software industry. Also ask of they provide fair return policies – if they don’t, walk away and find another vendor.

If you are ordering from the Internet, make sure to inquire about their delivery services and how much it costs. Some companies may fool you – they may jack up shipping and handling costs to make up for the low software price.

Performance Management Software

Filed under: Software Hall @ 4:24 am

Managers, like everyone else, want their performance positively appraised. They seek approval. Even if individual managers have full freedom to act in accordance with the currently conceived social responsibilities, they might not do so because of standards applied in evaluating their performance. That’s where the performance management software plays a helping hand.

Therefore, if their success is measured by profit, living within a budget, tax collection as a percentage of income, or the volume of blood contributed to a blood bank, managers will tend to strive for excellence in these regards. If success is measured in familiar terms – such as pollution control, the number of reformed convicts returned successfully to society, the dollar support for employees seeking university degrees, the ratio of “disadvantaged” to total number of employees, achievements in raising the productivity of subordinates, or combinations of these and similar goals – then managers will strive to achieve them.

The most appropriate standards to use for appraising managers as managers are the fundamentals of management. It is not enough to appraise a manager broadly, evaluating only performance of the basic functions of the manager; appraisal should go further. The best approach, also been used by the performance management software is to utilize the basic techniques and principles of management as standards.

If they are basic, as they have been found to be in a wide variety of managerial positions and environments, they should serve as reasonably good standards. As crude as they may be, and even though some judgment may be necessary in applying them to practice, they give the evaluator some benchmarks for measuring how well subordinates understand and are following the functions of managing. They are definitely more specific and more applicable than evaluations based on such broad standards as work and dress habits, cooperation, intelligence, judgment or loyalty. They at least focus attention on what may be expected of a manager as a manager.

They clasp, grip, clamp and hold on to anything and everything that they need to. As a result, they have become the receiving end of abuses that are too many to mention.

Taking care of one’s hands goes beyond washing them whenever they are soiled and applying beauty aids like moisturizers and lotions to them for maintenance. Light stroking movements should be used.

The next step in giving hand massage involves moving the thumbs away from each other from the center of the hands towards the outsides several times, then between the tendons on the back of the hand and towards the wrist. Then, taking each finger between the finger and the thumb, circular or twisting movements should be done up and down each finger.

The next step in giving hand massage involves turning over the hand being massaged. The same routine of moving the thumbs away from each other from the center of the palm is to be done while applying more pressure this time.
